Knowledge Organisers

'Knowledge Organisers' are documents outlining important, useful and powerful knowledge; including dates, subject specific vocabulary and definitions on a single page. For children to succeed in a particular area, they must have a foundation of factual knowledge, understand those facts and organise knowledge in order to facilitate retrieval and application. We can see knowledge organisers as a way to enable this. There are many arguments made for the necessity of the memorisation of important knowledge. Our working memory capacity is limited, so by storing more in our long-term memory, we can free up working memory capacity.

We have been in the process of focusing on the content of our whole curriculum to ensure that there is a much greater emphasis on the ‘sticky knowledge’ that children need in order to truly understand concepts and also to enable them to apply that knowledge. We have looked at each subject and identified the essential knowledge that we feel is the children’s minimum entitlement.
