Foundational Knowledge at Home

At Lapal Primary School, we are committed to helping children build strong foundations for future learning. Each half term, every year group will receive a Foundational Knowledge at Home infographic outlining the key knowledge, facts and skills that we would like children to revisit regularly at home.

The purpose of these infographics is to support retrieval practice; helping pupils repeatedly recall important learning so that it becomes embedded in their long-term memory. Research shows that children learn more effectively when key knowledge is revisited little and often, rather than through lengthy periods of study.

Each infographic highlights:

• Essential knowledge and facts children need to remember and build upon.
• Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) and other curriculum priorities for the half term.
• Ongoing skills that are developed throughout the year.
• Practical ideas for parents to use at home.
• Recommended online resources and programmes that support learning.

We know that family life is busy, so the activities are designed to be simple and manageable. In most cases, just five to ten minutes a day can have a significant impact on children's confidence, fluency and long-term retention of learning.

Many of the suggested activities can be woven naturally into everyday routines, such as talking during car journeys, discussing books together, practising number facts while shopping, or encouraging children to explain their thinking during everyday conversations.

By working together at school and at home, we can help children secure the foundational knowledge they need to succeed both now and in the future. We encourage parents and carers to celebrate effort, make learning enjoyable and remember that regular practice, little and often, makes a big difference.
